Bushenyi – A team of seven physicians who studied alongside Dr. Celestine Barigye at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) from 1991 to 1996 visited their colleague at his Kyeitembe residence in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality over the weekend. The delegation, led by Prof. Frank Rubabinda Asiimwe – Consultant Urologist and lead kidney transplant surgeon at Mulago National Referral Hospital – expressed optimism about their former classmate's recovery progress.

Prof. Asiimwe confirmed that Dr. Barigye, current Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, is no longer in critical condition. "We're celebrating his remarkable improvement. Our medical assessment confirms his physical recovery, though some rehabilitation remains. He's strong and progressing toward full health," Prof. Asiimwe stated. "We thank God for his healing and commend his wife's steadfast support. Dr. Barigye remains mentally sharp and determined to complete his recovery journey before resuming national service," he added.

The prominent medic had been undergoing treatment for nearly a year, initially at Nsambya Hospital before being transferred to Turkey for specialized care. Dr. Barigye's wife, Birungi Ruth Barigye, reported significant progress in her husband's condition: "His strength has greatly improved, and we anticipate his return to work shortly."

She extended gratitude to the government for their sustained support: "The Ministry of Health, particularly the Permanent Secretary, facilitated our medical trips to Turkey and provided fuel for regular visits to Nsambya Hospital." Mrs. Barigye also refuted social media claims about neglecting medical treatment: "These allegations are completely false. We've pursued every appropriate medical intervention throughout his illness."

Professional Background
Dr. Barigye holds an MBChB from MUST and a Master of Public Health with an international health specialization.
Since December 2014, he has served as Executive Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Uganda's busiest regional healthcare facility. His distinguished career includes roles as Bushenyi District Health Officer, lecturer at Kampala International University, and Technical Assistant to former Health Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.
