The National Resistance Movement Party Presidential Candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has expanded his campaign trail to the Rwenzori Sub-region where he confirmed that the government will construct a new international airport and extend the Standard Gauge Railway to Kasese District, aimed at boosting tourism and business operations in the area.

While addressing a large gathering at Nyakasanga Playgrounds in Kasese District, President Museveni noted that due to the high tourism traffic in Kasese District and the entire Rwenzori Sub-region, there is a need for additional infrastructural developments, including an international airport to attract more tourists to the area’s tourism sites, as well as improved railway services for business.

Presidential candidate Museveni told the gathering that electricity distribution plans for the few unserved areas of Kasese District are underway, along with water distribution. He also said that a number of roads in Kasese District are due for reconstruction under the massive road infrastructural development plan for the Rwenzori Sub-region.

The President said that the roads include Kikorongo–Bwera road, Kasese–Kirembe road, and Bundibugyo–Fort Portal road, which will link up with the ongoing construction works on the Mityana–Mubende–Kyenjojo–Kabarole–Fort Portal road, whose construction works he promised to expedite with immediate effect.

The National Resistance Movement Party Presidential Candidate, Museveni, however warned leaders against scattered planning, saying it derails development progress. He explained how the NRM prioritisation strategy has delivered on major development and socio-economic transformation initiatives and asked leaders and Kasese District residents to embrace the same.

President Museveni instructed the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja, and the Attorney General, Hon Kiryowa Kiwanuka, to address land queries raised by Kasese District leaders and to fast-track the implementation of government pledges to the area’s residents. He also directed the State House Comptroller, Ms Jane Barekye, to respond to issues raised regarding service delivery and government commitments.

Presidential Candidate Museveni emphasised that the government of Uganda is ready to counter any forms of threats and insecurity from and within the country’s border in Kasese, and he rallied residents to cherish and protect the prevailing peace and security.

He reminded the electorate of Kasese District of the importance of peace and stability to national development, referencing previous insecurities in the area that the NRM government successfully countered. He enumerated the NRM’s contributions to Uganda as he rallied the electorate to re-elect the NRM government for another term for continued development and socio-economic transformation.

President Museveni promised more interventions in health and education services for Kasese District, adding to the 260 government primary schools across sub-counties in the district. He also promised additional health service initiatives on top of the district hospital, Health Centre IVs and IIIs already established in several sub-counties.

He explained the need to differentiate between wealth creation and development so that people can focus correctly on socio-economic transformation.

He unpacked the NRM's dynamic four-acre model initiative and its qualified enterprise sectors, which include poultry, dairy farming, coffee growing, fish farming, piggery, among others. He highlighted success stories of implementers of the NRM wealth creation strategies and rallied all residents of Kasese District still living under subsistence to emulate the same.

He assured the people of Kasese District of immense job opportunities through wealth creation programs initiated by the NRM government and mentioned opportunities in commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT, as well as job opportunities in artisanship and skills training, as demonstrated by graduates of the Presidential Zonal Industrial Skilling Hubs.

While speaking at the same event, the NRM Second National Vice Chairperson, Rt Hon Anita Among, tasked the NRM fraternity in Kasese District to scale up grassroots campaign mobilisation, protect the prevailing peace and security in their area, and applauded President Museveni for availing UGX 136 billion for the upgrade of River Nyamwamba.
