Police in Buhweju District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of Kyogabirwe Olivia, 35, a resident of Enkombe Trading Centre, Kiyanja Parish, Kyahenda Sub-county.
She is alleged to have been strangled by Turinawe Kenneth, 24, a resident of Ruzinga in the same sub-county.
According to SP Tayebwa Apollo, Acting Spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi sub-region, the incident was reported on September 2, 2025, at around 7:00 am. Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased’s husband, Kabatungye Nicholas, returned home from gold mining and found his wife’s body lying on the floor of their house. Reports further suggest that the couple had long-standing family conflicts linked to allegations of witchcraft, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
Police officers visited the scene, conducted investigations in line with standard procedure, and later transferred the body to Nsiika Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
SP Tayebwa confirmed that one suspect had been arrested to assist with the investigations. He appealed to the public to refrain from acts of lawlessness, warning that such actions are punishable under the law.
Domestic Violence Trend in Buhweju
This latest killing adds to a series of domestic-violence-related murders in Buhweju District in recent months. On April 13, 2025, police in Rwengwe Sub-county arrested Nshemereirwe Shallon on allegations of killing her husband, Patrick Bainomugisha, 53, during a domestic dispute and secretly burying his body beneath the bedroom floor of their home in Kaniga I Village. The body was later exhumed on court orders.
Earlier, on August 4, 2024, a Uganda Prisons warder, Alex Kajwarire, was murdered in Nsiika Town Council following a family wrangle. Police arrested four brothers in connection with the killing.
The Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024 also recorded a nationwide rise in domestic-violence cases, with 14,073 incidents registered. Police have since urged communities to seek mediation in domestic disputes and to report conflicts before they escalate into violence.
Investigations into the death of Kyogabirwe Olivia are ongoing, and police say updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
