Bushenyi District Police have launched an investigation into the recovery of election materials from Kizinda Town Council Hall following last week’s presidential and parliamentary general elections held on January 15, 2026. According to Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, police acted swiftly after receiving information about the materials left behind at the town council hall.
“We swiftly responded to information regarding the materials and recovered what appears to include a yet-to-be-determined number of suspected ballot papers, declaration forms, and electoral seals that were left behind following the elections,” Tayebwa said.
“The scene was managed according to standard police procedures to preserve the integrity of the evidence and ensure a thorough investigation.”
Tayebwa confirmed that police have arrested Electoral Commission officials involved to assist with inquiries.
“We have so far arrested the concerned Electoral Commission officials to aid our investigations,” he said.
“We are committed to conducting a fair and transparent investigation and will take all necessary measures to establish the facts surrounding this matter.”
Recovered election materials
The Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson also called on the public to cooperate with the investigation.
“We urge anyone with information regarding this matter to come forward and share it with police discreetly. Your cooperation will help ensure that any gaps or irregularities are addressed promptly,” Tayebwa emphasized.
He warned against actions that could escalate tensions in the area.
“We also call on all affected parties to refrain from any acts of incitement. Peace and calm must prevail while the investigation is ongoing,” he added.
The recovery of the election materials has raised questions about the handling of electoral processes in the district, and authorities say investigations will focus on determining how the materials ended up at the town council hall and whether there were any irregularities during the voting process.
Police officials are expected to release further updates as investigations progress.
Residents of Bushenyi have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to electoral materials.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of electoral processes nationwide, as stakeholders continue to call for transparency, accountability, and adherence to electoral laws.
