The 65-Foot Heart: How Populous Designed the World Cup's Most Talked-About Space

Architecture studio Populous has transformed a Kansas City war memorial lawn into the world's most visible temporary installation. Their secret weapon: a towering heart-shaped gateway that has become the 2026 World Cup's defining visual.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri

On the south lawn of the National WWI Museum and Memorial stands a gateway that has become one of the most photographed structures in the world. It is sixty-five feet tall. It is shaped like a heart. Painted in red and gold, it glows at night like a beacon for the hundred thousand football fans who have descended on the heartland of America.
The structure is the centrepiece of the official FIFA Fan Festival for the 2026 World Cup. Designed by global sports architecture firm Populous, it has rapidly become the tournament's most talked-about fan zone.
"We wanted people to feel the city the moment they arrived," said Kelly Holton, Populous senior principal. "The heart is everywhere in Kansas City. You put up a sixty-five-foot heart and suddenly everyone understands exactly where they are."

A City Defined by Its Symbol
The KC Heart — a simple red heart bearing the city's initials — emerged from the local arts community and has become shorthand for the city's warmth and hospitality. Populous seized on this symbol to create an installation that needed to be legible, photogenic, and authentically local. In its first week, images of the KC Heart Gateway have appeared in media across more than forty countries. Several couples have reportedly used it as a backdrop for marriage proposals.

The Architecture of a Festival
The gateway is the most dramatic element, but not the only one. Visitors pass through an entry corridor framed by flags of 48 nations, then open onto two large LED stages with 4,500 square feet of video boards. "We mapped every sightline," Holton noted. Food zones reference Kansas City's BBQ culture with cedar-clad facades and metal roofing — avoiding generic event infrastructure.

Populous and the Architecture of Experience
Populous has designed Wembley Stadium, Optus Stadium, and countless others. For World Cup 2026, they also worked on host stadium modifications. But the fan festival represents a different challenge: temporary architecture that must feel significant without permanence. "Temporary is harder in some ways than permanent," said Holton. "A festival space that exists for three weeks needs to communicate everything immediately. That's a different kind of design intelligence."

The Question of Legacy
Fan festivals leave nothing behind. The tents come down, the lawn returns to a memorial ground. But the best temporary architecture changes how people understand a city. The Paris 1998 fan zones helped cement the Champs-Élysées as a gathering place. London 2012 showed that temporary venues could aspire to permanent quality.
Whether Kansas City's heart achieves that legacy is unclear. But the Instagram posts and marriage proposals suggest something.

What This Means for You
If you are in Kansas City during the World Cup, the fan festival is free and open to the public on match days. The Chainsmokers are confirmed for a late-June appearance expected to draw tens of thousands. If you are not in Kansas City, the fan festival matters as a design argument: that sporting mega-events should celebrate local identity, not impose a generic template. It is an argument being made with a sixty-five-foot red heart. And it is hard to miss.
