Police have arrested a private security guard in connection with the theft of UGX 29 million in cash and 900 grams of gold valued at approximately UGX 500 million from a motor vehicle at a gold company premises in Kampala.
The suspect, Akena Justine, was attached to Magnum Security Company and was deployed to guard the premises of Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road at the time of the incident on April 10, 2026.

According to police, Akena allegedly stole a bag containing the cash and gold from a vehicle belonging to Katuramu Maggie. After committing the theft, he reportedly locked the premises and went into hiding.
The suspect was tracked and arrested on April 15, 2026, at about 10:30 pm in Gaspa Village, Bweyale Town Council in Kiryandongo District. Upon interrogation, Akena admitted to the offence.

Preliminary investigations revealed that he had used part of the stolen money to open a retail shop, from where he was apprehended.
“Akena Justine is currently in custody at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue and preparations for prosecution are underway,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson.

Magnum Security Company is a licensed private security firm operating in Uganda, providing trained personnel to various sectors since 2019.
The case has drawn attention due to the significant value of the stolen items — particularly the gold — highlighting vulnerabilities in securing high-value premises in Kampala’s business areas.

Police have appealed to members of the public with any additional information to come forward as investigations intensify.
