The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone boys’ football silver medallists, Kicwamba High School from Rubirizi, have embarked on preparations ahead of the national USSSA Boys’ Football Championship due to take place in Lira from May 11–20.
This comes after their successful campaign at the concluded USSSA Ankole Zone Championship in Ibanda, where they reached the finals for the first time in history, only to lose 1-0 to eventual champions St Kagwa Bushenyi High School.

The Rubirizi champions will learn about their opponents on Monday when the national draws for the championship, which returns to Lira after a decade, are conducted.
Having repeatedly emerged champions of the USSSA Rubirizi District and reached the finals of the Ankole Zone for the first time, the youthful side will head to Lira determined to prove their strength against the best teams in the country. Their outing last year, which saw them reach the Round of 16 and finish 12th overall, remains a motivating factor.
“We are happy with the performances at the zonal level, though we wanted to win our first title and failed. But we are still happy. It is progress that we cherish, and we shall continue to do even better. In Lira, we expect to perform better than last year because we know we can, and we shall ensure it happens,” said the school team manager and head teacher, Robert Ddembe.

Kicwamba boasts a richly talented side, with team captain and central defender Manager Rasuru providing the needed command at the back as well as discipline on the field of play.
The lanky defender has mastered the art of leading his colleagues, and with him only in Senior Four, the future over his remaining two years with the school team looks promising.

Apart from Rasuru, left full-back Shatanu Jafaari Tumusiime (S.3) gives the team balance on the left flank with swift forward moves to connect with fellow Senior Three student and left winger Kazibwe Twairu. This pair has proved a menace to most opponents, especially when attacking down the right side.
Midfielders Benedicto Craishi (S.3) and Brian Senoga (S.3) provide stability in the middle of the park, while Peter Tugume’s swift attacks and dribbling skills make their attacking force dangerous.

Nelson Nkahebwa, the team head coach, believes this is their year to shine at the national level after testing the waters last year with an encouraging 12th-place finish.

The USSSA Boys’ Football Championship will kick off on May 12 at Lira Town College in Lira and will feature top teams from the 19 USSSA zones across the country.

Kicwamba will be joined by Mbarara Army Boarding Secondary School, St John Fisher Ibanda S.S., and champions St Kagwa Bushenyi High School to represent the Ankole Zone in Lira, while Buddo S.S. are the defending champions.
