Jacob Oboth-Oboth has distanced himself from reports suggesting he has been endorsed for the position of Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, saying he is not aware of any such backing.
The remarks come after Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly praised the former State Minister for Defence and appeared to endorse him as a suitable candidate for the Speakership.
Muhoozi described Oboth-Oboth as one of the government’s best-performing ministers and indicated he would make a strong Speaker in the incoming Parliament.

However, Oboth-Oboth moved quickly to clarify his position, stating that he is unaware of any official endorsement regarding the Speakership race.
“I am not aware of any Speakership endorsement,” he said.
The development comes as intense lobbying and speculation mount over who will lead the 12th Parliament following the swearing-in of newly elected Members of Parliament this week. Several names have been floated within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for both the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Political observers note that Gen. Muhoozi’s comments have significantly heated up discussions within party circles, as attention shifts to the organisation of the new Parliament and the election of its leadership in the coming days.
