A total of 999 cases of motor vehicle theft were reported to the police in 2024, marking a slight decrease of 1.2% compared to 1,011 cases recorded in 2023, according to the latest Uganda Police Force Crime Report. In 2024, a total of 4,890 motor vehicles were reported stolen. Out of these, 2,447 were successfully recovered, 486 were found abandoned, while 1,957 remain unaccounted for.
How vehicles were stolen per region
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) South registered the highest number of motor vehicle thefts with 202 cases, followed by KMP North with 188 cases, KMP East with 144 cases, Rwizi with 88 cases, Greater Masaka with 40 cases, and Savannah with 37 cases. The police have attributed the slight decline in motor vehicle thefts to increased surveillance, community policing efforts, and the use of technology in tracking stolen vehicles. However, they continue to urge motorists to adopt additional security measures, including installing tracking devices and parking in secure locations.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to recover stolen vehicles and dismantle car theft syndicates operating within and outside the country. Investigations remain ongoing, and the police encourage members of the public to report any suspicious activity related to vehicle theft.
