A devastating mudslide in Bulambuli District has left 15 people dead, with 113 others still missing. The mudslides, which struck five villages in Buluganya Sub County, have also left 15 people injured. Those rescued have been admitted to Buluganya Health Center III for treatment.
The affected villages include Masugu, Namachele, Natola, Namagugu, and Tagalu, where rescue operations are ongoing but hampered by poor accessibility. According to Police, impassable roads have prevented vehicles, including ambulances and wheel loaders, from reaching the disaster sites.
Rescue operations in full gear
The Police, in collaboration with other security agencies and local residents, are working tirelessly to locate survivors and recover missing persons. Despite the challenging terrain, efforts to navigate the mud-covered areas continue. The Uganda Red Cross Society has joined emergency responders on the ground, providing aid and support to affected families. Supplies such as food, water, and temporary shelter are being distributed as rescue teams work around the clock.
Appeal for assistance
Authorities have called for additional support to accelerate rescue efforts and aid distribution. They also appealed to the public to avoid the affected areas to allow emergency teams to work efficiently.
Community at risk
The mudslides, triggered by days of heavy rainfall, highlight the vulnerability of communities in mountainous areas. Authorities are urging residents in landslide-prone regions to remain vigilant and consider relocating to safer zones if possible.
Further updates on the search and rescue operations will be provided as efforts continue to locate the missing and bring relief to the survivors.
