Rubanda District
Shock and fear have gripped Rubanda District after the home of LC5 Councillor Obed Mutatiina Kitabutuuka was torched in a suspected arson attack on Monday night, destroying property worth millions of shillings and leaving his son injured. The incident occurred under unclear circumstances, with the assailants yet to be identified. According to preliminary accounts, the councillor’s son sustained injuries while attempting to escape the burning house and was later rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.
Police have since cordoned off the scene and launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack. By press time, no arrests had been made.
Although investigations are still ongoing, Kitabutuuka suspects the attack was politically motivated. He links the incident to his active involvement in campaigning for Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament aspirant Ninsiima Evelyn Kikafunda. “This attack did not just target my family; it was meant to instil fear because of my political stance,” Kitabutuuka said, calling on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Local residents described the incident as alarming and condemned the use of violence, especially as the country heads into a tense electoral period. Community leaders have appealed for calm and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies.
Police are yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicated that arson is among the key lines of inquiry. Investigations into the motive and perpetrators of the attack are ongoing.
