The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced the full restoration of internet services across the country following a temporary shutdown imposed during the recently concluded general elections.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the communications regulator said the restoration followed the successful completion of comprehensive technical and security assessments conducted in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the communications sector.
Internet services were shut down on January 13, 2026, on the eve of the general elections, as part of government-directed security measures aimed at safeguarding national security, maintaining public order, and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
The shutdown affected access to social media platforms and other internet-based services nationwide, disrupting communication, business operations, and access to online services for several days.
According to UCC, the restrictions were lifted after authorities were satisfied that the prevailing security situation had stabilised and that the communications infrastructure could safely support unrestricted internet access.
“With the successful completion of the required technical and security evaluations, members of the public can now access the internet and all online services without the previously imposed restrictions,” UCC said in the statement.
The Commission expressed appreciation to the public, internet service providers, and other stakeholders for their patience, cooperation, and understanding during the period of limited connectivity.
It acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the shutdown but emphasised that the measures were taken in the interest of national stability and public safety.
UCC further reaffirmed its commitment to continuously monitoring the digital environment to promote a safe, stable, and reliable online experience for all users.
The regulator urged members of the public to use online platforms responsibly and in compliance with existing laws governing digital communication and information sharing.
The restoration of internet services is expected to ease communication, revive online business activities, and improve access to digital services, particularly in sectors such as education, finance, media, and e-commerce, which were significantly affected by the restrictions.
