SOROTI — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have reinforced their peacekeeping efforts in Somalia by deploying the Fourth Aviation Component, which will replace the Third Aviation Component. The outgoing team has successfully completed a year-long mission under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, officially flagged off the new aviation unit at the Soroti Air Force Wing. During the ceremony, Lt Gen Muhanga stressed the importance of discipline and physical fitness for success in military operations. "If you want to push your limits, discipline and regular physical exercise are key," he said. He added that maintaining good health through exercise is essential for field performance, noting that "when you maintain discipline, success will come knocking on closed doors."
Deputy Commander of the Air Force, Maj Gen David Isimbwa, speaking on behalf of the Commander Air Force, praised the dedication of the soldiers and wished them success in their mission.
The Fourth Aviation Component will be led by Col Solomon Andiandu, with Lt Col Pascal Bariine serving as deputy commander.
Since its first deployment on October 15, 2020, the Aviation Component has been crucial to peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, providing airlift services for troop movements, supply transportation, and casualty evacuations.
The event was attended by Brig Gen Richard Rubongoya, Director of Human Resource Management – Air Force, and other senior officers.
