Peace Rugambwa, the newly appointed Presidential Advisor in charge of Agriculture and Local People, has issued a stern warning to the electorate in Sheema District: voting for independent candidates will cost the district its “share of the national cake.”

Rallying support for NRM flag bearers ahead of the upcoming elections, Rugambwa was explicit in her disdain for NRM-leaning independents, specifically targeting former MP Jacklet Atuhaire Rwabukurukuru, who is challenging the official flag bearer, Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa.
“What I urge you: don’t vote for an independent candidate; it will be spoilt,” Rugambwa told a crowd on Monday. “If you want me to come and work for you, don’t give Jacklet any vote because if you don’t vote a flag bearer, the President will not bring me to Sheema again. Just tell her 'bye,' just wave for her.”

Rugambwa characterized independent candidates as a source of friction within the legislative process. “They shame President Museveni. They are showing other states that they overlook the President... In fact, independents in parliament are the most disturbing groups. When the President brings an idea or a proposal, they are against it because they are selfishly looking for their own interests, their stomachs, and their families,” she claimed.

The advisor’s rhetoric grew even more aggressive as she outlined how voters should handle different political factions. “Where you meet the opposition, just give him a kick; where you meet an independent, just kick; and where you meet an NRM flag bearer, just tick,” Rugambwa stated.

The warning came with a clear financial ultimatum. Rugambwa, who recently donated medical supplies and chicken hatching machine in Kigarama and Shs 10 million to Sheema Youth and Women SACCO in Sheema Municipality, tied future funding after elections in 2026.
“After an election, we shall inject more money in your SACCO... I will request those groups to give me their bank accounts so that we can get what to put for you after the elections. We are only remaining with two weeks,” she said. “I request you to give me Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa, Dickson Kateshumbwa, Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, and Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu. Give me people who have flags so that I can work for you in peace.”

Kachene, the coordinator for Team Peace Rugambwa, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that independent candidates threaten the stability the NRM has provided over the last 40 years. “As Team Peace, we are against any independent candidate destroying our NRM party. We want NRM flag bearers right from the grassroots,” he noted.

The NRM flag bearer for the Woman MP seat, Adrine Katusiime Mwebesa, thanked the advisor for her intervention, urging the youth and women to “cast a reasonable vote” on January 15th to ensure continued access to presidential support, peace and development projects.
