The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has urged newly promoted generals and senior officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to rise to the greater responsibilities that come with their new ranks.

Speaking during a pipping ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya, Gen. Kainerugaba said promotions are not merely symbolic but signify increased obligations to the nation and to those under command.
“This ceremony is not just about a change of insignia or rank; it represents greater responsibility and heavier tasks,” the CDF said. “Your subordinates will now look to you for mentorship, wisdom, and solutions.”

Gen. Kainerugaba, who also serves as Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, cited a Biblical passage to underscore the weight of leadership.
“The Gospel of Luke, chapter 12 verse 48, reminds us that from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded,” he said, adding that the trust placed in the officers by the nation and their commanders requires sharper judgment, stronger integrity, and unwavering commitment to the troops they lead.

He further called on the UPDF and the broader security sector to continue safeguarding Uganda’s hard-won peace, while sustaining the Force’s contribution to regional and allied missions in the spirit of Pan-Africanism.

Addressing the national political climate, Gen. Kainerugaba urged Ugandans to maintain peace during the electoral period. He encouraged citizens to vote and return home, noting that the presence of electoral agents, the media, and international observers would ensure transparency and credibility.

He warned that any attempts to disrupt the peace would be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law. “We urge all political actors to adhere to Electoral Commission guidelines and cooperate with security agencies for the safety of all. Citizens should vote peacefully and go home, rather than loiter around polling stations,” he said.

The CDF also thanked the Commander-in-Chief, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for what he described as strategic leadership that has shaped the UPDF into a professional force contributing to peace in Uganda, the region, and across Africa.

Speaking on behalf of the promoted officers, Lt. Gen. Jack Bakasumba, the Chief of Joint Staff and the most senior among the promotees, expressed gratitude to the CDF and the Commander-in-Chief for the trust bestowed upon them. He pledged that the officers would uphold UPDF values of integrity, courage, and discipline.

The ceremony was attended by senior UPDF commanders, including Commander Land Forces Lt. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga, Commander of the UPDF Air Force Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Ms. Edith Butuuro.
