Got Ramogi - This afternoon, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda was honored with the title of Luo Elder during the 4th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival, an event celebrating the rich heritage and unity of the Luo people. This marks the third honorary title for President Museveni, who previously received similar recognition from the Alur and Acholi communities. The President now eagerly awaits being bestowed with a traditional Luo name.
In his address, President Museveni expressed his admiration for cultural festivals that promote unity and identity among African communities. He highlighted the significance of such gatherings, drawing parallels to a recent event held for the Ateker people in Teso, Uganda.
“These events remind us of the unfairness imposed by colonial borders that divided communities united by shared heritage and history. What right did the colonizers have to separate what God had joined or to annihilate entire communities? Thankfully, Africans survived, and now we are beginning to reorganize,” he remarked.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of strengthening bonds of Undugu (brotherhood) to address modern challenges and fulfill the historical missions of African freedom fighters: achieving independence (Uhuru), fostering prosperity, and ensuring strategic security. He urged African communities to adapt their approaches by moving beyond traditional symbols of identity, such as spears and animal skins, and embracing contemporary tools to counter sophisticated threats.
The Piny Luo Cultural Festival continues to be a platform for showcasing the unity and resilience of the Luo people and fostering cross-border cultural solidarity.
