Bushenyi – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on graduates to avoid alcoholism, drug abuse, and other societal vices to ensure a productive future.
The President’s message was delivered by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, during the 5th graduation ceremony of Valley University of Science and Technology (VUST) in Bwatogo Cell, Central Division, Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality. The event featured 857 graduates, including 325 males and 472 females, with 325 earning bachelor’s degrees and 532 receiving diplomas.
Prominent businessman and University Chancellor, James Musinguzi Garuga, presided over the ceremony, while the best-performing students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements:

President’s message
In his speech, President Museveni emphasized the importance of living responsibly to secure a bright future.
“If you know that you're a patriot and that your family and country depend on you, you cannot handle your life recklessly. Avoid alcohol, laziness, and promiscuity, as these lead to complications,” he stated.
He commended VUST for aligning its curriculum with market demands, particularly by focusing on science-related courses that enhance employability.
“The NRM government’s focus is on job creation and improving household incomes. I commend VUST for offering relevant courses that prepare students for the job market,” Museveni said through Nabbanja.
Tackling youth unemployment
The President noted that unemployment among educated youth is largely due to a mismatch between university curricula and market demands. He urged institutions to guide students toward careers in high-demand fields such as medicine, nursing, engineering, and science education.
“Even when jobs are available, many students lack the skills required by the market. The demand for doctors, nurses, science teachers, and engineers is high, yet few pursue these careers,” he remarked.
Progress in peace and development
Highlighting the government’s achievements, Museveni pointed to improved security, infrastructure, and electricity supply as key drivers of economic growth.
“The favorable conditions of peace, security, and good infrastructure must translate into jobs and wealth. The NRM encourages every household to engage in commercial agriculture, industries, IT, or services to create wealth and jobs,” he added.
Use your education to change the country
VUST Chairman, Prof. William Kyamuhangire, encouraged graduates to use their education to address challenges in their communities.
“Education is not just about earning academic papers; it’s about applying your knowledge to bring positive change,” he advised.
Contributions
President Museveni contributed UGX 30 million towards the graduation ceremony, while Prime Minister Nabbanja added UGX 10 million.
The ceremony marked yet another milestone for VUST, an institution established in 2016 by William Mukaira, the first Bushenyi District Chairperson. It continues to produce graduates equipped to tackle societal challenges and drive development in Uganda.
