People who received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine may have a longer life expectancy than those who remained unvaccinated, according to findings from a large new study.
The research, believed to be the biggest of its kind, analysed data from more than 28 million adults and compared outcomes between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. It found that adults who received at least one dose of a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine were about 25 percent less likely to die from any cause over the following four years than those who did not receive a shot.

Vaccinated individuals were also found to have nearly a 75 percent lower risk of dying in hospital from Covid-19. Overall, the likelihood of death from Covid was up to five times higher among unvaccinated people.

The study comes amid ongoing debate over mRNA vaccines, including concerns about rare side effects such as myocarditis. However, federal data indicate that such risks remain very low, estimated at about one case per 100,000 people.

Researchers suggested that improved survival among vaccinated individuals may partly reflect broader social factors, as those who chose vaccination were more likely to have higher socioeconomic status and better access to preventive healthcare.

Published earlier this month in JAMA Network Open, the study examined 22.7 million vaccinated and 5.9 million unvaccinated adults in France aged 18 to 59. Participants were followed for an average of 45 months.

During the study period, deaths were recorded at 0.4 percent among vaccinated individuals and 0.6 percent among the unvaccinated. Leading causes of death included cancer, accidents and circulatory diseases.

The strongest contrast in Covid-related deaths occurred within the first year, reinforcing evidence that vaccination significantly reduced the risk of severe disease and death.
