BUSHENYI
Kampala International University (KIU) Crows Rugby Club's dream of reaching their maiden quarter-final in a major local rugby championship was shattered on Saturday evening after they lost 43-15 to fellow university side Victoria Sharks in a Round of 16 match played at Bushenyi Grounds.
The Ishaka-based side, which recently qualified for next season's National Rugby Sevens League, made a poor start, conceding 14 points in the opening minutes of the first half. However, they fought back to reduce the deficit to 19-7 before going into the break trailing 26-12.
The Sharks' commanding first-half performance was driven by Emmanuel Duku, Saul Kivumbi, Vernon Kasule and Blaise Ochieng, whose tries helped the visitors establish a comfortable lead.
KIU failed to make much of an impact in the second half as the visitors dominated the game. The hosts managed only a penalty converted by Benjamin Mukisa, while the Sharks continued to pile on the points to secure a 43-15 victory.
The win sent Victoria Sharks through to the quarter-finals, while their prop, Vincent Sworo, was named Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In other matches, Walukuba Barbarians overcame neighbours Kakira Simbas 40-21, while Stanbic Black Pirates beat Mbale Elephants 43-2 away in Mbale.
Toyota Buffaloes thrashed Kitgum Lions 65-0 in Kitgum, while KCB Kobs faced little resistance in Gulu, defeating Gulu City Falcons 31-5.
Plascon Mongers narrowly beat Storm 13-10, while Hima Impis overcame title contenders Hippos 32-27.
The Round of 16 results mean that most of the title contenders remain in the competition, with Hippos the notable casualty after being eliminated by fellow title hopefuls Hima Impis.
