Irankunda led officers to a location in Kisoro Hill village where he had hidden an AK-47 rifle

Kisoro — Security operatives in Kisoro District have arrested two prime suspects believed to be behind a string of armed robberies in the region. On June 27, 2025, a joint security operation led to the arrest of Irankunda Gerald, alias Ndereya, and Habyarimana Vallence from Karumena and Kisoro Hill villages, respectively. According to police spokesperson SCP Kituuma Rusoke, upon arrest, Irankunda led officers to a location in Kisoro Hill village where he had hidden an AK-47 rifle, a magazine with one live round of ammunition, a pair of police khaki trousers, and suspected police jungle boots. The recovered items have been secured as exhibits.

During interrogation, Irankunda confessed to participating in four armed robberies in Kisoro District, including incidents in Mugombero Town Center, Natate, and Mutorole, registered under CRBs 303/2025, 304/2025, 381/2025, and 402/2025 at Kisoro Central Police Station.
Further investigations revealed that Irankunda had previously escaped from Ruti Police Station in Mbarara while being interrogated by the Flying Squad Unit, after his initial arrest in Kisoro.

He also implicated Habyarimana Vallence, a Rwandan national, and another suspect, Anthony Imanirakiza, who was earlier apprehended by the community and handed over to police. Other accomplices are reportedly still at large. Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are underway. “We commend the community for their vigilance and urge anyone with information on the remaining suspects to report to the nearest police station,” SCP Kituuma said.

More details will be provided as inquiries progress.
