KAMPALA - The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, has cautioned Muslims against self-proclaimed social media Sheikhs who spread discord within the community.
He delivered this message on November 22 while officially closing a three-day Imams’ retreat for the eastern Muslim region at the Khadija Education Centre in Mbale City.

The retreat, which drew over one thousand participants from various districts in the eastern region, was overseen by Sheikh Ahmad Hamid Wandenga, the eastern regional assistant Mufti, according to a statement by Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) spokesperson Ashiraf Zziwa.
“The Mufti cautioned against self-styled social media Sheikhs who spread discord, advising the Imams to consult reliable mainstream leaders and to remain God-conscious in their spiritual duties, as they will be held accountable by the Creator,” the statement read.

The Mufti also recounted challenges he faced after returning from studies in Saudi Arabia, including criticism and hostility from detractors who falsely branded him a heretic.
He expressed his gratitude to the central organizing team, led by Sheikh Adinan Gamusi under the guidance of Sheikh Wandenga, for selecting timely and relevant educational topics. He praised their efforts to refresh the knowledge and spiritual focus of mosque Imams, equipping them to better fulfill their roles.
“Thank you for reviving what we used for spiritual awakening 30 years ago. It is on that strong foundation that we laid the current Islamic growth in the region,” Sheikh Mubajje said during the retreat, which featured various educational sessions led by different facilitators.

The Mufti also highlighted the upcoming UMSC 52nd anniversary celebrations, scheduled for December 12, and urged all Muslims to attend.

Dr. Wandenga emphasized the importance of mobilization and the successful organization of the retreat. Meanwhile, Sheikh Imran Abdnoor Ssali, the UMSC secretary for religious affairs, expressed gratitude to both the organizers and participants for making the seminar a success.

The closing event was attended by Mbale City Assistant Resident City Commissioner Hussein Kadimba, the Chairperson of the Electricity Regulatory Authority Dr. Sarah Wasangali Kanabi, Muslim women leaders, and other notable guests.
