Kampala — Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha has been remanded by the Nakawa Magistrate Court until November 4, 2024, following her involvement in an incident where she assaulted a traffic officer at Lugogo traffic lights on October 18, 2024.
The altercation, which was captured in a viral video, led to multiple charges being filed against Bashisha. She faces counts of assault, attempted simple robbery of an EPS (Express Penalty Scheme) machine, failure to comply with police directives, careless driving, and driving with expired insurance.
According to the police, the incident occurred when Bashisha, disregarding the traffic officer's instructions, engaged in an aggressive confrontation that culminated in the assault. She also attempted to take the officer's EPS machine, a device used for issuing traffic fines.
Her remand and court proceedings have sparked significant public interest, given the video's widespread circulation. Bashisha will remain in custody until her next court appearance in November.
