MBARARA CITY

Police in Mbarara City have arrested three suspected livestock thieves accused of stealing and slaughtering cattle and goats before allegedly transporting the meat to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for sale.
The suspects were arrested at around 10:00 p.m. on Friday in Kageeti, Sanga Town Council, while allegedly loading meat onto trucks, according to preliminary information from police.

Some of the meat that was being transported to Congo

Police allege that the suspects were part of a livestock theft operation responsible for the slaughter of 39 cattle and seven goats.

During the operation, police recovered two trucks, UBR 721N and UA 144AE, which were reportedly being used to transport the meat. Police said some of the recovered meat had already begun to rot.
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle organised livestock theft networks operating across the cattle corridor and neighbouring areas.

Trucks that were being sued to transport the meat

The suspects are expected to be interrogated as investigations continue to establish the source of the animals, the extent of the alleged trafficking operation and whether other people are involved.

Police have not yet released the identities of the suspects or provided further details about the intended destination of the meat in the DRC.
