The Church of Uganda has announced that this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo will be conducted scientifically and under strict observance of Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The announcement follows a visit by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, to the Uganda Martyrs Anglican Site in Namugongo to assess the preparedness of Uganda Christian University (UCU), which was mandated by the House of Bishops to organise the national celebrations on behalf of the Province.
Speaking after the inspection on Wednesday, Archbishop Kaziimba commended UCU for the extensive improvements undertaken at the site ahead of the annual commemoration.
“I am impressed by the level of preparation and the commitment demonstrated by Uganda Christian University in ensuring that the Martyrs’ site is ready to host this year’s celebrations safely and in a dignified manner,” Archbishop Kaziimba said.
Since taking on the responsibility, UCU has implemented several infrastructure and beautification projects aimed at improving pilgrims’ experience and enhancing safety at the site.
The developments include the construction and renovation of modern toilet facilities, establishment of walkways, restoration of the green environment, reconstruction of sections of the collapsed perimeter wall, drilling of a solar-powered water supply system, renovation of buildings, and general clean-up of the Anglican shrine.
According to the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, this year’s celebrations will be limited to invited guests at the main service in line with public health guidelines.
“The national celebrations at Namugongo will strictly be by invitation as we continue to prioritise the health and safety of Christians and all Ugandans,” Rev. Canon Ongeng said.
He added that all dioceses across the Province have been encouraged to organise Martyrs’ Day commemorations within their respective parishes to allow Christians to participate safely from their local communities.
“The official Martyrs’ Day liturgy will be circulated through diocesan secretaries to guide the celebrations across the country,” he noted.
The Archbishop also directed Uganda Christian University to continue coordinating this year’s scientific celebrations while preparing to organise next year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations. The next organising cluster will be announced during the 2027 commemorations.
The Church of Uganda has urged Christians and the general public to remain vigilant and continue observing Ministry of Health SOPs throughout the celebrations.
Uganda Martyrs’ Day, commemorated annually on June 3, honours the young Christian converts who were executed for their faith between 1885 and 1887 during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II.
