The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rubirizi District, Mr. Rwamutojo Dagaras, has urged families to refrain from fighting over land left behind by their late parents, saying such disputes threaten peace and unity in communities.
Mr. Rwamutojo made the remarks on Wednesday while intervening in a family land wrangle among relatives of the late Fikiri Yusuf, who have been quarrelling over their parents’ land located in Mugogo II Village, Ryeru Subcounty, Rubirizi District. He advised families to use inherited land productively to improve their livelihoods rather than turning it into a source of conflict.
“Families should use land to fight poverty and hunger, and develop themselves instead of destroying their unity. Many young people drop out of school or abandon work opportunities after inheriting land from their parents,” Mr. Rwamutojo said.

The RDC also urged residents to always seek legal and peaceful means of resolving inheritance-related disputes through local leaders and courts rather than resorting to violence. The LC1 Chairperson of Mugogo II Village, Mr. Yona Turyasiima, said many families in Rubirizi District are breaking apart because of inheritance conflicts that could easily be avoided if people embraced hard work and valued education.
“Parents should focus on educating their children and guiding them to work for their own success instead of depending entirely on inherited property,” Mr. Turyasiima noted.

One of the family members, Mr. Alan Niwagaba, together with Mr. Muhamadi Fikiri, thanked the Office of the RDC for guiding them to remain calm and united.

They pledged to preserve their late parents’ legacy by using the land for productive purposes that can benefit future generations. “We have agreed to follow the legal procedures and maintain peace as advised by the RDC,” Mr. Niwagaba said. The Rubirizi District leadership has since called on all residents to use family land as a foundation for development rather than division, emphasizing that peace and hard work remain key to community progress.
