How men can lower their prostate cancer risk: Study

Men who want to lower their risk of prostate cancer should release more frequently

Men who want to lower their risk of prostate cancer should ejaculate more frequently, according to a new review of studies spanning 30 years. The research suggests that ejaculating 21 times per month could reduce the risk of prostate cancer by about one-third. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, experts believe that increased blood flow to the prostate might help flush out carcinogens from semen and other fluids.

The review, published in Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, analyzed 11 studies with nearly 150,000 participants, ranging in age from 20 to 80. One significant study from Harvard Medical School found that men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month had a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer compared to those who did so just four to seven times.

Frequent ejaculation may promote prostate health by delivering oxygen and nutrients through increased blood flow, which could remove waste products linked to cancer. Additionally, it might flush out harmful carcinogens that accumulate in semen. The review highlighted the importance of including sexual behavior in patient counseling and healthcare strategies, given the emerging link between ejaculation frequency and prostate health.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, affecting one in eight and killing around 35,000 annually, according to the American Cancer Society. Men over 65 and black men are at higher risk of developing the disease. Symptoms often include difficulty urinating, loss of bladder and bowel control, painful ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction.
