The local football governing body, FUFA, has named Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso as coaches for the Uganda Cranes team that will compete in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
The continental football showpiece, which allows only locally based players to represent their countries, will be staged in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from August 2 to August 30.
As part of early preparations for the joint-host team Uganda, FUFA announced the coaching duo, who are expected to release the provisional squad list soon to kick-start preparations.
"FUFA is pleased to announce the appointment of the following coaching panel for the Uganda national team participating in the CHAN 2024 tournament scheduled to take place in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the Pamoja East Africa hosting arrangement," read part of the statement.
The letter further stated that the two coaches will be closely monitored by Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put and his assistant Sam Ssimbwa throughout the preparation and tournament period.
"Further technical personnel will be announced in due course, following the naming of the squad," it concluded.
Muhumuza, who replaced the sacked Livingstone Mbabazi at Vipers SC in April last year, rose to prominence after guiding the Wakiso-based club to a domestic double — winning both the league title and the Uganda Cup.
Byekwaso, on the other hand, had a challenging season at former league champions and record title holders SC Villa. He has also been at the helm of the national U20 side, which recently failed to qualify for the continental finals.
The CHAN 2024 tournament has attracted 19 teams. Uganda is placed in Group C alongside Niger, Guinea, Algeria, and South Africa. Kenya is in Group A with tournament favourites Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia, while Tanzania is in Group B with Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. Group D comprises defending champions Senegal, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, and Nigeria.
