RUBIRIZI - Authorities are grappling with a disturbing rise in vandalism incidents targeting vital government infrastructure across the country. The latest occurrence, reported between the night of January 16 and 17, 2025, took place in Katanda 1 Village, Katanda Sub-County, Rubirizi District, where suspected criminals vandalized and stole 120 meters of electrical wires from a three-phase power line.

A team of electricians from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) Katerera Branch visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and initiate repairs. The incident has left residents in the affected areas without power, disrupting daily activities and local businesses.

Authorities suspect that the theft involved individuals with specialized training in electrical work, potentially electricians. "Such acts suggest the involvement of skilled persons," said a local official overseeing the investigation.

The Electricity Amendment Act of 2022 provides for severe penalties for those involved in such crimes. Authorities have issued a stern warning to transporters, buyers, and individuals who provide storage for stolen electrical materials. Those found guilty face imprisonment of up to 12 years or fines as high as 1 billion Ugandan shillings. "This is a serious offence, and ignorance will not be accepted as a defense," the official emphasized.

The public is urged to report any suspicious activity or individuals handling electrical materials unlawfully. Community cooperation is essential in curbing this trend of vandalism and protecting critical infrastructure that supports essential services.

Efforts to restore power to the affected areas are ongoing, while investigations to apprehend the perpetrators continue.
