The government has launched a sh385.2b solar-powered water supply and irrigation system in Kalungu district to address water shortages and revitalize agriculture. The project aims to ensure consistent water supply for irrigation, create jobs, and improve livelihoods.
Water state minister Aisha Ssekindi emphasized the importance of the project in preventing crop failure due to water shortages, which has led to food insecurity and economic challenges. She urged the community to maintain the facility for long-term benefits. The project, funded through a UK Export Finance Loan and the Ugandan government, serves 12 acres of farmland at Lukaya-Lutente village, with plans to expand. It includes 32 solar panels, a 40,000-litre reservoir, and other components designed to support commercial crops like tomatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, and coffee.
Kalungu district chairperson, Kamaadi Nyombi Mukiibi, applauded the initiative, noting it will reduce wetland encroachment by offering an alternative water source. Farmers like Mohammad Ssonko and David Ssaazi expressed optimism, saying the system will enable year-round farming and increased yields, thus boosting their incomes. The district authorities promised to monitor the project closely to ensure it benefits committed farmers.
