At least 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have been arrested by police after allegedly blocking the road and disrupting traffic at Bujjuko Trading Centre along the Mityana highway.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the incident occurred on Monday morning as security teams were coordinating movements ahead of presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s planned campaign rally in Mityana District.
“Today, October 6, 2025, presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert planned to travel to Mityana District for his rally. He was expected to take the Mityana highway but instead chose to use Hoima Road,” Onyango said in a statement.

He explained that a joint security deployment had been arranged to facilitate the candidate’s movement and ensure safety along the route. However, at Bujjuko Trading Centre, a group of NUP supporters reportedly gathered along the Mityana highway, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, which caused heavy traffic congestion and disrupted public order.
“Security personnel issued several warnings, but the group persisted. As a result, about 29 suspects were arrested and are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango said.

Police have since urged all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users during campaign activities.
“We urge all candidates to cooperate with law enforcement, respect route plans agreed upon with security agencies, and ensure that their supporters do not disrupt public order,” Onyango added.

The arrests come as the presidential campaigns gain momentum across the country, with several candidates traversing different regions to hold rallies ahead of the 2026 general elections.
