The Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is mourning the loss of Ms. Claire Kirabo, who passed away today after spending a record six years in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Ms. Kirabo was admitted unconscious in 2020 and had been under the continuous care of the hospital’s dedicated multidisciplinary ICU team. She later regained awareness and consciousness through the efforts of the medical staff, supported by what her family described as divine intervention.

According to a statement from the hospital, Kirabo, who was battling a rare medical condition, had become part of the hospital family during her prolonged stay — the longest recorded in the facility’s ICU.

Suzan Mutetsi, her next of kin, expressed deep gratitude to God for sustaining her life through the medical teams. She acknowledged the enormous financial and emotional cost of the care, which the family could not have managed alone, and thanked the hospital administration for their unwavering support.

“We are grateful to God who worked through our resilient medical teams to keep her alive for this long. She had become part of the family, and we are all saddened by her death today,” the hospital noted in its announcement.

Hospital officials described the multidisciplinary team’s commitment as remarkable, highlighting the challenges of long-term critical care.

The passing of Ms. Kirabo marks the end of a significant chapter for both her family and the hospital staff who cared for her over the years. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may God strengthen and comfort her family during this difficult time.
