The Rubirizi District Community Development Officer (CDO), Marklevis Mbonye, has issued a stern warning to men in the district to cease illegal hunting in protected game reserves. He urged them instead to embrace government programs designed to improve livelihoods and alleviate poverty.

Mbonye made these remarks while officiating as the chief guest at an event where Angella Stress Ministries delivered humanitarian support to the Kichwamba Orphanage Foundation in Kichwamba Sub-county. He noted that poaching often leads to arrests, imprisonment, or even death, leaving families destitute and increasing the number of orphaned children in the community.
Edison Kyagaba, the Director of the Kichwamba Orphanage Foundation, explained that the organization was established to address the growing number of vulnerable children in the area. The foundation’s mission is to educate, empower, and care for orphans, including those living with HIV and those who lost their parents due to poaching incidents.
“The foundation targets vulnerable children to help them realize their full potential through education and care,” Kyagaba said, noting that although they have started a school, they still face significant resource limitations. He expressed gratitude to the visiting ministry: “I thank Angella Stress Ministries for the love and support in restoring hope to the hopeless among these students.”

Angella Stress, the founder of Angella Stress Ministries, commended the orphanage for its dedication. She pledged continued support through advocacy and donated a variety of essential items, including clothes, posho, rice, money, soap, and sanitary pads.

Leaders Call for Boost in Tourism Security
Meanwhile, district leaders are calling on the government to strengthen security measures to protect tourism sites and visitors in Rubirizi. During a meeting ahead of a workshop with the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Ahamedi Kinene emphasized the need for improved infrastructure.
“I urge the government to invest in security and infrastructure to attract more tourists to Rubirizi District,” Kinene stated, while also encouraging local leaders to mobilize communities to improve hotel standards.
Nickodemus Nayebare, Head of Economics and Tourism at the Ministry of Finance, noted that the objective of the engagement is to develop a comprehensive tourism plan that improves the livelihoods of those living near wildlife areas.
Didas Mucunguzi Magezi, the Rubirizi District Tourism Officer, highlighted the potential for “agri-tourism,” such as coffee farming and tree planting. He urged stakeholders to utilize local resources to generate income, encouraging communities to tap into these opportunities to improve household welfare.

A Life of Service: Tribute to Fr. Paolino Tomaino
In a separate development, the community gathered at Kyamuhunga Catholic Parish for a memorial thanksgiving Mass to celebrate the life of the late Rev. Fr. Paolino Tomaino, who passed away on March 3, 2024. Fr. Paolino, born in Italy in 1937, lived in Kyamuhunga for 66 years and was a renowned champion of community development.
The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Ayebare Arikanjero, praised the late priest’s tireless efforts in fighting poverty, corruption, and social indiscipline. “I ask Christians to carry on the legacy of love, discipline, respect, and compassion while they are still alive, so that when they leave the world, people will always remember the good things they did,” Fr. Ayebare said.

Rev. Fr. Felix Tumuhaise, the head teacher of St. Mary’s Vocational School Kyamuhunga and a close friend of the late priest, added that remembering Fr. Paolino’s work brings great joy because he directly supported the government in human development. “Fr. Paolino was a biblical, blessed, and faithful servant who faithfully administered what his Lord and God entrusted to him,” Tumuhaise stated.
National Deputy Treasurer Hon. Jackline Kyatuhire and Fr. Belto Franco also remarked that Fr. Paolino’s death was a significant loss to the nation, citing his extensive work in constructing churches, schools, and hospitals to improve health and education standards.
