Mbarara/Buhweju – Police in Mbarara and Buhweju Districts are searching for the headteacher of St. Victor High School in Katara Subcounty, Buhweju District, for allegedly ordering the severe beating of a Senior One student. The 14-year-old student, Natumanya Moreen, was reportedly beaten by teachers on the headteacher's orders and is now in critical condition.
According to eyewitnesses and Moreen’s own account, she was falsely accused of stealing UGX 60,000 from a teacher’s house. "Despite her protests of innocence, Moreen was taken to the headteacher’s office, where she was tied up and mercilessly beaten by teachers in an attempt to extract a confession," a student revealed.
Moreen stated that after the beating, she was abandoned in the dormitory and left to suffer in pain. She sustained serious injuries on her buttocks and is currently unable to sit on her own.
Fellow students later alerted the teachers about her deteriorating condition, and Moreen was finally taken to Diisi Hospital in Bwizibwera, Mbarara District, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Father condemns teachers' actions as police vow to arrest suspects
The victim’s father, overwhelmed with emotion, tearfully condemned the brutal treatment of his daughter.
"How could they do this to my child?" he lamented.
Meanwhile, when contacted, headteacher Kabagambe Benard denied any teacher involvement, claiming that Moreen was beaten by fellow students. However, Moreen disputed this, insisting that the teachers beat her on the headteacher’s orders.
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Mbarara, SP Benon Byamukama, strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing that corporal punishment is illegal in Uganda.
"We will not rest until the suspected teachers are arrested and brought to justice," he vowed.
