GOSSIP: Vipers SC Boss Lawrence Mulindwa Turns Down Museveni’s Offer to Head FUFA or Sports Ministry

SPORTS GOSSIP

Prominent businessman and President of Vipers Sports Club, Lawrence Mulindwa, has reportedly declined President Yoweri Museveni’s offer to take over leadership of Ugandan football or serve as Minister of Sports in the new Cabinet.

According to highly placed sources, President Museveni held secret talks with Mulindwa at State House recently, where he asked him to either assume the presidency of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) or take up the Sports Ministry portfolio.

The overture came after intelligence reports allegedly indicated that current FUFA President, Hon. Moses Magogo, has become a major obstacle to the development of Ugandan football. Magogo has been accused of misusing billions of shillings meant for football development, with claims that the funds were diverted to personal use, including constructing apartments, purchasing luxury vehicles, and other personal expenses.

Sources further claim that during the meeting, Mulindwa set tough conditions for accepting the position, particularly demanding that the national sports budget be increased from Shs 15 billion to Shs 31 billion annually. President Museveni reportedly offered Shs 21 billion instead, promising gradual increments, a proposal Mulindwa is said to have rejected.

Mulindwa is widely respected in Ugandan football circles for his successful leadership of Vipers SC, which has won multiple league titles under his stewardship.

Pressure on Magogo
Meanwhile, sources indicate that quiet efforts are underway to compel Moses Magogo to step down peacefully from the FUFA presidency without attracting the attention of FIFA.
Recent security operations, including raids linked to the former Speaker of Parliament’s office, reportedly saw Magogo’s passport confiscated, his bank accounts frozen, and his movements monitored in Kampala. These actions are believed to be part of a broader strategy to pressure him into resigning.

Uganda Cranes failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite having a competitive squad and strong fan support, a development that has intensified criticism of football administration in the country.
As of now, neither Lawrence Mulindwa nor the State House has issued an official statement regarding the alleged meeting. Moses Magogo has also not commented on the swirling allegations.

The developments point to significant behind-the-scenes power struggles within Ugandan football as the new government takes shape.
