BUSHENYI
A sombre mood has engulfed Kantojo Cell in Rwentuuha Town Council, Bushenyi District, following a horrific road accident on Thursday evening that claimed three lives and left several others fighting for their lives.
The crash, which occurred at about 4:50 pm along the Mbarara–Ishaka Highway, involved a Tausi bus registration number UA 707AK and a Toyota Noah registration number UA 196AY.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident was allegedly triggered by reckless driving by the Toyota Noah driver.
Ainomugisha Justus, a resident of Kantojo who witnessed the collision shortly after escorting his wife to catch a bus to Mbarara, described the scene as chaotic.
“The Noah driver was coming from the Ishaka side and was driving recklessly. He suddenly left his lane and rammed into the speeding bus. The bus driver tried to dodge him, but the Noah driver was unstable. Three people who were occupying the Noah died on the spot, and for the others, survival is now in God's hands,” Justus said.
Another witness, Joseph Ayesiga, corroborated the account, noting that the Noah driver was driving on the wrong side of the road.
“The bus driver tried to remain in his lane, but the Noah driver kept following the bus’s path,” Ayesiga added.
Some residents, including Robert Ayebare, also blamed the poor condition of the road, saying the Mbarara–Ishaka Highway is narrow and riddled with potholes, making it difficult and dangerous for motorists to manoeuvre, especially during heavy traffic.
Both drivers reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash.
The Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the fatalities and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“We have confirmed that three people died on the spot. We share the sorrow with the families that have lost their relatives and pray for the souls of the deceased,” Tayebwa said.
He urged motorists and pedestrians to observe traffic regulations.
“We ask motorists to be vigilant, whether you are a driver or a pedestrian. Let us follow the rules and regulations that govern road safety to protect our lives,” he added.
The injured victims were rushed to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Ishaka for post-mortem examinations as investigations continue.
Rising Accidents
The Mbarara–Bushenyi Highway has in recent years registered a series of fatal accidents, partly blamed on reckless driving and the deteriorating state of the road.
In January this year, four people died in a hit-and-run accident near Peak Hotel along the same highway after the motorcycle they were riding was knocked by an unidentified vehicle.
Earlier, in October 2025, two people were killed at Kitwe Trading Centre after a Canter truck swerved to avoid a pothole and collided head-on with a motorcycle.
Similarly, in November 2024, three people died and several others were injured in Mbarara District after a vehicle lost control when it hit a pothole on the same road before colliding with another car.
Residents and road users have repeatedly raised concerns over the narrowness of the Mbarara–Ishaka Highway and the numerous potholes that continue to endanger motorists despite it being a major transport corridor linking several districts in western Uganda.
