Ibanda - The Uganda Police Force in Rwizi Region has launched a full investigation into the brutal murder of No. 75290 Police Constable Chemonges Suleiman, a 28-year-old officer attached to Bisheshe Police Station in Ibanda District, who was lynched by a mob while on duty. According to a statement from SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, April 6, 2025, at a funeral in Kibare cell, Nyabuhikye sub-county, Ibanda District.

PC Chemonges had been deployed to provide security at the burial of Kahangire Lazarus, an inmate who recently died at Nyabuhikye Government Prison. Kahangire had been on remand over an attempted murder case (IBD CRB 849/2023) linked to a longstanding land dispute involving the family of Mbabazi Vincent.
Police say the officer was attacked by a mob, allegedly composed of the deceased inmate’s relatives, shortly after arriving at the scene—before his colleague could join him. The mob accused the police of being responsible for Kahangire's death in custody.

“The police strongly condemn this senseless act of violence,” said SP Kasasira. “PC Chemonges Suleiman was performing lawful duties when he was attacked and murdered. Such criminal behavior will not be tolerated.”
Responding officers recovered an SMG rifle (UG POL 563619069) at the scene, along with 16 rounds of ammunition. The body of the deceased officer was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police have vowed to bring all perpetrators of the mob killing to justice.
“We want to assure the public that all those involved in this criminal act will be arrested and prosecuted,” SP Kasasira added.

Investigations into the murder are ongoing, and the Uganda Police Force has appealed to the public to refrain from mob justice and allow lawful processes to prevail.
