Territorial Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the circumstances under which a couple died following a suspected domestic violence incident in Nyarushanje Sub-county. The deceased have been identified as Nduhukire Bonniconcila, 56, and her husband, Tumwekwase Theodoro, residents of Kamuzinzi Village, Nyabushenyi Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county.
According to police, preliminary findings indicate that Bonniconcila was allegedly murdered by her husband, who later committed suicide by suspected poisoning.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said the couple had reportedly been experiencing prolonged domestic misunderstandings.
“It is alleged that the two had longstanding domestic issues. On the night of December 15, 2025, they reportedly spent the whole night quarrelling loudly, during which the man allegedly threatened to kill someone and then take his own life,” Maate said.
Police stated that on December 16, 2025, at about 5:00 pm, a family friend, Arituha Peace, went to check on the couple after becoming concerned.
“On arrival, she found the house open and a radio playing in the main house. When she called out and received no response, she proceeded to check inside the house and the kitchen, where she discovered Bonniconcila lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut on the neck,” Maate explained.
An alarm was raised, attracting neighbours to the scene. The area chairperson, Apollo Kamagara, was informed and subsequently reported the matter to Kiyenje Police Post, which alerted Rukungiri Central Police Station.
Upon visiting the scene, police discovered Tumwekwase Theodoro lying unconscious under a coffee tree near the home, having allegedly ingested poison.
“He was immediately rescued and rushed to Rwamahwa Health Centre IV for medical attention. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead this morning, December 17, 2025, at around 5:00 am,” Maate said.
Police have since conveyed both bodies to Buyanja Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem examinations to establish the exact causes of death.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. We continue to caution the public against resolving domestic conflicts through violence,” Maate added.
