Two school-going girls have died, while two elderly people survived with minor injuries, after a landslide buried part of a house in Murora Sub-county, Kisoro District.
The victims were identified as Musoni Brenda, 14, and Mujawimana Eseri, 12, both pupils and residents of Bukerahe Village in Chibumba Parish, Murora Sub-county.

The tragedy occurred at around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday in Nyabiyonga Village, Kibumba Parish, following heavy rainfall that has recently hit parts of the Kigezi sub-region.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the two girls had gone to spend the school holidays with their grandparents when the incident happened.

“It is alleged that after schools closed for the holidays, the parents of the deceased sent them to check on their grandparents, where they had been staying. While sleeping in the house this morning, part of the house was buried by a landslide, leading to the death of the two juveniles due to suffocation,” Maate said.

The house reportedly had four occupants at the time of the incident. The survivors, identified as Mulema Benon, 70, and Mbaboneye Avelina, 60, escaped with minor injuries and were rushed to Chahafi Health Centre for treatment.

“Residents, with the help of police, retrieved the bodies from the debris before they were taken for postmortem examination,” Maate said.

Police visited and documented the scene as investigations into the incident continue.
The latest incident adds to a series of landslides and flood-related disasters that have affected Kisoro and other districts in the Kigezi sub-region during periods of heavy rainfall, especially in mountainous areas prone to soil erosion.
