MBARARA
Police in Mbarara District have arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged murder and beheading of a 29-year-old man in Bwizibwera, Rwanyamahembe Town Council.
The suspects have been identified as Tukahirwa Rodgers, a resident of Bwizibwera Lower Cell, and Nasasira Darius, from Bwizibwera Upper Cell.
The deceased, Arinaitwe Richard, was allegedly beheaded on September 7, 2026, at an unknown time, with his head later dumped along Sibyangu Street in Bwizibwera Cell.
According to police, at about 7:48am, a severed human head was discovered at the doorway of the home of Gumisiriza Innocent along Sibyangu Street. Gumisiriza reported the matter to the LC1 chairperson, who subsequently notified Bwizibwera Police Station.
Police visited the scene at about 3:20pm and recovered the remaining body parts from a home in Bwizibwera Lower Cell. The remains were later identified as those of Arinaitwe by his biological mother.
As part of the investigation, police deployed a sniffer dog, Nana, at the scene where the head had been dumped. The dog reportedly picked up a human scent and followed blood stains, leading investigators to a house occupied by Tukahirwa.
Nana was later deployed at the location where the remaining body parts had been recovered. Police said the dog again picked up a human scent and tracked towards the area where the head had been dumped.
The canine team subsequently continued tracking from the dumping site, following blood stains that led investigators to a house occupied by Nasasira.
A search of Nasasira's house was conducted, during which police recovered a panga bearing suspected blood stains. The weapon was taken as an exhibit to aid further investigations.
Tukahirwa and Nasasira are currently in police custody as detectives continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding Arinaitwe's death and the alleged beheading.
Police said inquiries into the matter are ongoing.
