Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that the “war is done” between Israel and Iran, announcing that talks between U.S. and Iranian officials are scheduled to resume next week. The discussions aim to revive dialogue that was interrupted by the 12-day conflict between the two nations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament has passed a bill to suspend cooperation with the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The legislation still requires approval from the country’s National Security Council before it can be enacted.
The recent conflict has left a devastating toll: Iran reports that at least 627 people, including 13 children, were killed and 4,870 wounded since Israel launched its offensive on June 13. In Israel, at least 28 people were reportedly killed in Iranian missile strikes.
Gaza death toll continues to mount
Israel’s military operations in Gaza also continued today, with at least 51 more people killed. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the ongoing war has now killed at least 56,077 people and injured 131,848 others.
The broader conflict began on October 7, 2023, when attacks on Israel resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,139 people and the abduction of over 200 individuals.
Israel named on UN child rights blacklist for second year
The United Nations has once again included Israel on its annual “list of shame” for countries responsible for grave violations against children. Gaza remains at the top of the UN’s report on children’s rights violations, marking the second consecutive year Israel has appeared on the list.
The report, now in its 20th year, documents widespread violations attributed to Israel’s military operations in Gaza, as well as increasing violence against children in the occupied West Bank.
Israel has previously lobbied to stay off the list but is now officially named two years in a row.
Iran’s defence minister in China for security forum
Iran’s Defence Minister, General Aziz Nasirzadeh, has arrived in China for a major regional security forum, marking his first known international trip since the start of the war with Israel.
Nasirzadeh is attending a two-day meeting in Qingdao with defence ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional bloc co-founded by China and Russia that includes India, Pakistan, and Belarus. Iran officially joined the SCO in 2023. The forum, hosted by Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun, runs from Wednesday through Thursday. A video of Nasirzadeh’s arrival was posted by Yuyuantantian, a media outlet affiliated with China’s state broadcaster CCTV.
