KIGEZI
Police in the Kigezi sub-region are investigating two separate incidents that left three people dead, including a 12-year-old pupil, and four others injured.
Pupil Dies in School Wall Collapse
A Primary Seven pupil, Ashaba Princess, 12, of Rwerere SDA Nursery and Primary School in Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri District, died after a school building wall collapsed during a storm.
The incident occurred on April 16, 2026, at around 1:30 pm during the lunch break, when strong winds knocked down part of the school structure. The falling wall struck five pupils who were seated on the verandah having lunch.
The injured pupils have been identified as Abisnguza Emmanuel, 8; Azahura Treasure, 7; Ainembabazi Mercy, 10; and Mugarura Onesmus, 8.
They were rescued and rushed to a nearby private clinic, but Ashaba died on the way to the hospital.
Police visited and documented the scene, and a death inquiry file was opened. The body was taken to Buyanja Health Centre IV for a postmortem, while the injured pupils were referred to Kambuga Hospital for treatment.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Elly Maate said preliminary findings indicate that the collapsed structure had weak walls.
"This should serve as an eye-opener to other schools to ensure the safety of their structures and avoid endangering the lives of innocent children," Maate said.
Two Motorcyclists Killed in Rukiga Crash
In a separate incident on the same day, two motorcyclists died following a head-on collision along the Ntungamo–Kabale highway in Rukiga District.
One of the deceased was identified as Alex Mugisha, 68, a market vendor and resident of Katoma Cell, Rwahi Parish in Ntungamo District.
The identity of the second rider had not yet been established by press time.
The crash occurred at around 8:15 pm at Nyakanengo Cell.
It is alleged that the unidentified rider of motorcycle registration number UFH 513S, who was carrying a passenger and heading towards Kabale, lost control, veered out of his lane, and collided head-on with Mugisha, who was riding motorcycle registration number UEW 824U.
Mugisha died on the spot, while the other rider was pronounced dead on arrival at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital. The condition of the passenger was not immediately established.
Traffic police visited the scene and towed the motorcycles to Muhanga Police Station pending inspection.
