Suffering unites humans more than love because survival is always a greater motivator than the social constructs we label as love or compassion. Suffering is what fuels political revolutions.
When a population has suffered enough under a given political regime, they unite in their suffering and bring about change. No political movement ever forms out of love for the people; shared suffering forms the foundation of all political movements.
One example is South Africa during the Apartheid era, where common suffering served as the unifying factor. Segregation brought African Americans together under Martin Luther King Jr. and other Black leaders.
Therefore, I believe that the concept of love as a unifying force among human beings is utterly false.
The hardships we face in life transcend all races and cultures, and it is from these hardships that a revolution in human consciousness will emerge, rebelling against all government systems and demanding a better quality of life for all.
The economic systems we currently have in place are extremely oppressive. Real freedom has always been economic, not political. For Ugandans, I don't think we have suffered enough as a population to demand total change. Unfortunately, that day may come at a greater cost if prevailing circumstances don't change.
