Stakeholders push for ICT in Primary Schools

Stakeholders have proposed that the government integrate Information and Computer Technology (ICT) into primary education

To enhance pupils' learning and ease teaching processes, education stakeholders have proposed that the government integrate Information and Computer Technology (ICT) into primary education. They explained that using ICT can help primary school pupils access information and resources, improving their understanding of the topics taught. The proposal was one of those submitted to the Education Policy Review Commission during a Buganda regional stakeholders meeting organized for the greater Mubende districts at the National Teachers College (NTC) Mubende last week. The meeting attracted education sector stakeholders from the districts of Mityana, Mubende, and Kassanda, including teachers, Chief Administration Officers, district leaders, teacher association leaders, school management committees, and religious leaders.

The commission was constituted in 2021 by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mrs Janet Kataha Museveni, to review the performance of the 1992 government white paper on education that came from the famous 1989 Kajubi report.

Only High-end Primary schools have computer facilities for their pupils

Andrew Kamya, the head of ICT at Mubende NTC, proposed that in the new policy, the government should support ICT in schools by providing equipment to all education institutions, focusing on solar-powered gadgets. Kamya requested the government also introduce a policy to provide free or subsidized internet services to the education institutions, starting from primary schools to universities. “There is a need for the government to create a post of an ICT teacher and an ICT technician right from primary school up to the highest level. These will support the running and sustainability of ICT in schools,” he explained.

He further proposed that the government fund the creation of an education app that will host all the necessary educational information in the country for all education levels. Kamya said the app would make it easy for learners to do research on relevant topics as guided by teachers, improving the accessibility of education services in the country. He also proposed that ICT hubs be created at every sub-county or district to help train youth in ICT skills and farmers in using ICT to improve their yields, among other things.
