In a bold move to protect the lives and property of residents, Sheema District Deputy RDC Sam Orikunda has halted all stone quarrying activities on Kaishenkuguzu Hill in Nyabwina Village, Masheruka Subcounty, Sheema North, Sheema District. The RDC's decision follows numerous complaints from residents living near the hill, who have raised concerns about the dangers posed by stone quarrying. The activity has been blamed for causing rockfalls and landslides, putting lives at risk. "We cannot allow this activity to continue when it poses a significant threat to the lives and property of our people. As a government, our duty is to protect citizens and ensure they live in a safe and healthy environment," he said.
The RDC also noted that quarrying was being conducted without proper safety measures, endangering both workers and the community. "We will not tolerate any activity that puts the lives of our people at risk," he emphasized. The decision has been welcomed by residents, who had been living in constant fear of landslides and rockfalls. Julius Tumusiime, a resident of the area, expressed relief, saying they can finally feel safe.
"We are grateful to the RDC for taking this bold step to protect our lives and property," he said.
Sheema District Environment Officer, Patrick Turyatunga Boaz, announced plans to collaborate with relevant authorities to find alternative livelihoods for the quarry workers affected by the ban.
"We understand that the ban will impact some people's livelihoods, but we are committed to finding alternative solutions that will benefit both them and the community as a whole," Turyatunga stated.
He added that bamboo trees will be planted to prevent landslides and rockfalls on the hill.
