Karenga,
Joint security forces from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have recovered two illegal firearms in a series of successful operations in Karenga District. According to Michael Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson, the first weapon—an SMG rifle with three live rounds of ammunition—was recovered from Lomeritum Lobwol Simon Peter, a 30-year-old resident of Lokorio Village. The suspect was arrested on May 21, 2025, and later led security forces to his residence, where the firearm was hidden.
In a separate incident, a second SMG rifle was voluntarily handed over to security forces by the wife of Lokuda Gabriel, a 70-year-old resident of Komem Village. Lokuda had been arrested earlier on May 4, 2025, and remains in custody as investigations continue. Longole praised the vigilance and cooperation of the local community, noting that such support is essential in curbing illegal gun possession and promoting long-term peace in the region.
“Our security agencies remain committed to maintaining peace and security in the region, and we urge members of the public to continue working hand-in-hand with us,” said Longole.
The recovery of the weapons is part of ongoing efforts by security forces to combat armed criminality and ensure stability across Karamoja and surrounding regions.
