President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially picked up nomination forms to run for re-election as Uganda’s President and as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party National Chairman, setting the stage to potentially extend his leadership to 45 years in power.
The President picked the forms on Saturday, June 28, at the NRM Headquarters in Kyadondo, Kampala, marking yet another milestone in his decades-long political journey that began in 1986 when he first assumed office after the liberation struggle. Speaking after receiving the forms, President Museveni said Uganda has steadily progressed through five critical stages of development under the NRM’s leadership. He outlined the party’s ambition for the next phase, which aims to transform Uganda into a $500 billion economy within the next five years.
He urged newly elected NRM district chairpersons to maintain impartiality and shun corruption as they mobilise support at the grassroots.
“I call on you to prioritize leaders who truly understand and uphold the party’s ideology and principles,” Museveni said. “Do not elect people driven by selfish interests. Let us focus on leaders who put Uganda’s national interest above personal agendas.”
President Museveni’s decision to seek another term cements his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. If re-elected, he will have led Uganda for a record 45 years by the end of his new term.
The NRM is expected to convene its national delegates conference later this year to endorse its presidential flag bearer and party chairman ahead of the 2026 general elections. More details about the President’s re-election roadmap are expected in the coming weeks.
