Police in Sheema District are investigating the circumstances under which Nuwajuna Kenneth, 44, a resident of Rugazi Cell, Masheruka Sub-county, died while in custody. The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. According to SP Apollo Tayebwa, the acting Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, the chain of events began on the night of August 6 at around 10:00 p.m., when Mugisha Ntatunda Elias allegedly found Nuwajuna inside his goat pen.
“He made an alarm, attracting his brother, Kanzara Nicholas, who helped arrest the suspect,” Tayebwa said. “The duo tied his arms behind his back with a rope before being joined by others who escorted him to Masheruka Police Station.”

At the station, Nuwajuna was re-arrested, charged with criminal trespass, and detained.
“Hours later, police officers noticed the suspect was in poor health,” Tayebwa added. “With the help of intelligence, officers mounted an operation that led to the arrest of all those who had earlier apprehended and escorted him. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to assaulting Nuwajuna on the way to the station. They were detained to assist in investigations into taking the law into their own hands.”
While police were preparing to take Nuwajuna for medical attention, other detainees informed officers at around 9:00 a.m. on August 10 that he was unconscious in the cell. Officers found him dead.

“The scene was visited by the magistrate and a team of detectives led by the Sheema District Police Commander,” Tayebwa said. The body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination. Tayebwa noted that the death could have been caused by injuries sustained during the alleged assault by the individuals who arrested him in the goat pen.

Police say investigations are ongoing and pledged to keep the family and public informed.
“We appeal to members of the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands and to always hand over suspects to lawful authorities,” Tayebwa said.
