Rubanda
Police in Rubanda District are investigating circumstances under which seven suspects escaped from lawful custody at Rubanda Police Station on Saturday afternoon. The incident happened on November 22, 2025, at around 3:30pm at the station located in Murole "B" Cell, Rubanda Town Council.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, the escape occurred when PC Erou Naboth, the officer guarding the cells, opened the door to allow one of the suspects, Turihohabwe Anthony, to speak to a relative who had come to visit him.
"As he escorted him back, another suspect, Taremwa Aaron, allegedly pushed the officer down, allowing seven inmates to flee, leaving only one detainee behind," Maate said.
He identified the escapees as Akansasira Junior, Biryomumeisho Dismas, Kanyesigye Ivan, Turihohabwe Anthony, Tumuhimbise Emmanuel, Taremwa Aaron, and Shabaruhanga Paulino.
Police said three of the suspects were being held over simple robbery, three over theft, and one over domestic violence. It was further established that case files for the three robbery suspects, as well as the file for the suspect who did not escape—who had been charged with injuring animals—had already been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) Kabale for perusal and legal advice.
Police Officers Nabbed
Police have opened a case of aiding escape from lawful custody, and the officer who was on duty at the time has been arrested. Other officers who were reportedly absent from duty during the incident have also been apprehended and charged with neglect of duty.
Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, describing it as an act of indiscipline by the officers involved.
"We have arrested the officer who aided the escape and others who were absent from duty. They will face charges accordingly. We call upon the public to alert police or local leaders if any of the suspects are seen so that they can be re-arrested," Maate said.
