Bushenyi/Sheema – Drama and confusion marked Tuesday’s (September 10) nomination process in Sheema Municipality after Municipal Speaker Steven Katwiromunda, nominated as councillor for Kabwohe Ward, was mistakenly listed as dead in the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) records.

Pius Ahimbisibwe, the returning officer for Sheema District, temporarily halted Katwiromunda’s nomination until the issue with NIRA was resolved. Once cleared, Katwiromunda addressed the media, saying:
“I am very grateful that the problem has been corrected. I am alive and ready to continue serving the people of Kabwohe Ward. My focus will remain on improving service delivery and ensuring development reaches every corner of my community.”

Deputy Mayor Lukia Nakalisa, who is contesting for the mayoral seat, was also successfully nominated. She appealed to residents for support: “I call upon the people of Sheema Municipality to join hands with me as we continue to deliver services and development. I also appeal to all NRM flag bearers to work together ahead of the elections.”

In Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality, a total of 66 candidates were nominated for various elective positions, according to district returning officer Joseph Tumwijukye.

Six candidates will contest for the mayoral seat: three representing political parties—NRM, NUP, and PFF—and three independents, including former mayor Jackson Kamugasha and municipal speaker Evarist Rwambuga. Other notable nominees include Guma Gumisiriza (FFP), Kacuncu Domazio (NUP), and the incumbent Richard Byaruhanga (NRM).

Tumwijukye noted that the three-day nomination exercise had ended successfully, with only a few aspirants turned away for failing to meet the requirements. He added that the next phase will cover municipal division and sub-county chairpersons and their councillors.

All candidates for special interest groups—youth, elderly, and persons with disabilities—went through unopposed, with four elective positions registering a single candidate.
