Kiyanja cell, in Mbarara city North division is one area in Mbarara city where garbage collection is still a challenge for both leaders and dwellers.
Residents in the area find it hard to properly manage waste, a vice that has seen the township look dominated by debris.
The overwhelming domestic refuse in the area has been linked to common illnesses as a result of poor sanitation according to local leaders.
Now, in a bid to promote good sanitation amongst residents, Nile breweries Mbarara branch on Thursday morning launched an effort to clean the town as one way of raising awareness that cleanliness is essential.
The cleaning exercise spearheaded by the environment and safety control officer at Nile breweries Mbarara branch Kusingura Perplex Aston, was characterized by several activities including opening of trenches, collecting and disposing off garbage.
This was done in partnership with other stakeholders including city leaders and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) officials.
‘’As Nile breweries, we have decided to commemorate the world environment day through doing such as one way of giving back to community. We looked around what best service we can offer and realised that cleaning Kiyanja town was prudent.’’ Said Kusingura.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5, and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
Uganda’s National celebrations were held on Wednesday in Sironko district.
According to Kusingura, many trenches had already been blocked by garbage and that this would cause stagnation of dirty water from people’s homes causing stench.
Anthony Agaba the Kiyanja cell LC1, said garbage has been a big problem in the area and that residents have suffered enough, the effects of the contamination.
‘’This is one of the most populated areas in the city and you are aware that when people are many, they generate a lot of garbage. So, what happens if everyone choses to throw it anytime anyhow?’’. Asked Mr. Agaba

Kyabwisho Gumisiriza, the Mbarara city North division mayor, who participated in the exercise noted that it is every one’s responsibility to ensure that garbage is properly managed and disposed off.
Kyabwisho explained that city council resolved to remove all garbage collection centres as some characters would take the opportunity to dump in dead bodies, faeces and other unpleasant material.
He however appreciated Nile breweries for their vision, focusing on human health.
‘’This has demonstrated a good lesson to residents that waste has to be properly managed if they are to stay free from diseases. It should open people’s eyes and attract other companies and non-governmental organisations in this area to do the same.’’ Said Kyabwisho.
This is however, not the first time Nile breweries is giving to the community. In 2022, the breweries company donated sh.50m to support the conservation of River Rwizi which was receding so fast.
The assistance has helped a lot in restoration of water catchment areas at the banks of the river which has seen a slight improvement in the protection of the river.
